At ArenaNet, we’re serious about audio. This week we’re going to take a look behind the scenes at the Audio Team that has been working so hard to create a compelling soundscape for Guild Wars 2.
To the casual observer, integrating sound effects, dialogue, and music into a MMO might seem like a straightforward task – until you take into account the sheer amount of sound assets being integrated into the game, the motion picture quality sound design, and the rigid attention to detail our audio team puts into every file. It’s a vast, ambitious undertaking, but our designers are up to the challenge.
Today we’re going to take a look at the involved process of field recording for Guild Wars 2 in our first behind-the-scenes Audio Team video. Tomorrow, we’ll dive a little deeper into sound design and integration in another video and a blog post from sound designers Drew Cady and Robert ***. Take a look, then meet us back here tomorrow!

I’m Drew Cady, Lead Sound Designer for Guild Wars 2. Together with my colleague Sound Engineer Robert ***, we’ve put together a blog post that looks a little deeper into the voice pipeline for our game. A great deal of thought and work goes into the simplest audio asset in Guild Wars 2, whether it’s a footstep on snow, the day and night cycle of ambient sounds, or a snarling charr voice. Today we’re going to pull back the proverbial curtain and look at how we do our work.

Hi everyone! This is Jim Boer again. In a previous blog post, I discussed the tools we use to create our in-game cinematics. This time, I’d like to talk about my other area of responsibility in the game: audio. My job is to design and create not only the runtime engine components, but also the tools required to support both cinematics and audio teams. I’m really excited about what we’ll be doing with sound and music in Guild Wars 2. Being an amateur musician and composer myself, game audio has always been a topic of interest to me.

I hear Blizzard has their own genetic breeding program where they breed the monsters needed for the game to record the sounds they make.|||Did seem more of a marketing type video than a demonstration video. (Yes, I know it's all marketing to some extent, but this did have more of that sort of feel to it.), probably because it resembles DVD features. Sort of nice, although not something I'll remember much.|||they did say THIS WEEK for audio. I take that to mean that this was just an intro video more then anything else.|||Quote:

There is going to be more coming out today.|||I have always been interested in the behind-the-scenes of sound and music creation. So this week is like a blessing.
The video actually had a lot of humor in it. Despite or perhaps because it covers sounds, the classic GW2 soundtrack was left out, and instead a purposefully country-style music was used.
Somehow the way they made the video made me think of guys like the Mythbusters etc.
I am looking forward to reading more about the sound (and hopefully music with Jeremy Soule?) creation process - something like this:
http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/music-old-republic|||i'm with you on this thalanor, if there is one thing i really love doing is making sound effects.
not just because of the fun behind it but also because your work is always there, whenever you hear footsteps or a warrior drawing a sword, it's your work right there.
i really hope this is done wide spread, as a man who listens to every detail it just annoys me when i hear something looping.|||Updated the first post by adding the new video to it. [Watch it here]|||Wow I hope that this is the norn music playing in those videos.
