First of all I just wanted to, again, say thank you to everyone involved in this event. It was nice to meet some other fans, play the game, and just hang out.
Everyone I talked to was very tight lipped. Despite the enjoyment of the fine spirits offered. It was still great to chat with people though. The only hint of new information I got out of them was that weapons implementation isn't complete. So the classes we know might yet get more weapons, or they might not.
I'm also a big fan of The IronKingdoms and the idea of a spell caster that can use pistols is just fantastic. This wasn't even remotely hinted at, but it would be cool none the less.
My wife won the first give away at the raffle. A lovely Aion canvas bag/backpack filled with some tshirts, a figurine, and an art book (to draw in, not the official art book).
Having watched many videos online I can honestly say the game looks even better in person. This is only a demo but I did notice that the leveling was fast and easy. I hit level 5 well within 20min of play. I hadn't noticed it before but the attributes to put points in are more like a traditional RPG now. The only criticisms I have are minor. The beginning game for the Human was very easy as a Necro. I didn't try any other profession. I only entered the death shroud state voluntarily. Fighting the Centaur mage and Earth Elemental at the end while very pretty didn't offer even a hint of danger. By the time I arrived at the garrison the Centaur was running back out along the bridge. I ignored the Elemental and tried to keep attacking the Centaur. He ran around behind the Elemental and then -blip- he was gone. It kinda ruined the immersion I had up to that point. By contrast I and two others ended up trying to take on The Shatterer. Wow was that an epic mistake. Not only is he powerful, but he is also surrounded by rather threatening enemies as well. I really felt like I was fighting a huge dragon whose casual glance was enough to nearly kill me. It was fantastic! Determining the range on your attacks takes a bit of getting used to. Several times I burned up the use of a spell because I was trying to use it out of range but didn't realize it. Now if I wasn't trying to get in as much gaming time as I could I might have bothered to read the skills in greater detail, so really, a minor annoyance. Other than that the only complaint I could have is that it isn't done yet. B-)|||Thanks for the review zeronine.
Glad to hear you had a good time playing it and well done to your wife for winning a prize (and getting her to go along)!
I've nothing to base it upon yet butit's good to know that casting a spell out of range still uses up energy - something I'll have to tell my fingers off for!!
Hope to hear more from you around here.

Darn... there goes that plan|||Quote:

Well she and I are both big fans of the GW1. So it would have been more impressive if I could have stopped her from going.
Casting a spell out of range not only uses the energy but the spell has to recharge. It does also pop up a small bit of text to let you know that you were out of range. I was just used to the GW1 method of it trying to move you within range automatically.
It was also worth noting that the bandits attacking the farm in the Human demo carry pistols and torches. Not necessarily a link to an unnamed profession but it does hint at possible functionality for player classes. The only bit of 'secret' information I got out of them was that the HoM reward pistol gets called the 'fishtol' around the office.
I'm a long time lurker around here. I resemble my assassin main that way.
B-)

There is plenty of room to tweak the difficulty and the power balance of each class.
I know, I was hoping for a small slip. Even just a hint. All I got were long pauses and then claiming they weren't sure. Good for them though. Of course even if I did get any super secret information, I'd say that I didn't.
B-)|||Awesome, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing!|||Quote:

I think I remember hearing somewhere that they're doing away with the idea that monsters use the same skills as human players. The reason they gave I think was that it would give them more freedom to make cool and unique enemies. Because of that I don't think we can draw conclusions about player classes from monsters, even if they are human like the bandits.
Thanks for the review though, good things to know. I hope they'll have more events where people can play the demo in the future, or maybe an updated demo later on this year. Beta would be even better but that's probably going to be awhile.|||I've been to a number of gaming conventions and my mother worked for Nintendo through most of my childhood.
Judging by what I saw in the demo and the news that has been floating around I think Beta is still quite far off. I give the ArenaNet/NCSoft developers a lot of credit. I support GuildWars as much as I can because I like their philosophy and attitude toward the genre and the industry. The demo was very polished and what this says to me is that they have spent a lot of time on the underlying structure of the game. They have made their engine quite flexible; easy to adjust and add on to. This is the most important and difficult section to code, and it executes beautifully. On the flip side they have a lot of stuff that they want to do, and a lot of story and content to create and balance. While I wouldn't classify the work as "difficult" it still takes talent and, most of all, time to do.|||Quote:

They did say this in an early interview, though I don't remember which one.
Still, while I wouldn't assume that bandits definitely means that pistols and torches are usable by a certain class, it does say that the possibility has been considered at some point, so a class may use this combination. It does add another data point that pistols are one handed weapons. (Which I think was announced but do not specifically remember where this was said.)
Were the areas you saw pretty much the same areas that have already been shown?|||This was the first time that i went to GW2 Event and i had a great time. Im very grateful that you guys came to NYC and i hope our NY community fan base met your expectations because you did ours =] I was lucky enough to win the VIP access and try out the demo booth, because of this forum, thank you. Even at the entrance you felt special, kinda like a celebrity cause vip peeps skipped the line lol, and got to play the demo. Their was different type of free food and drinks(+tips) and club music. GW2 presenters seemed to stick to Stella Artois Lager for the night, i did the same later on.
As i was standing in the line for GW2 booth, i met this girl named Victoria we talked for quite a bit, she was originally from New Mexico. And as we were talking we had a lot of food offers and not a single drink, i was so thirsty, especially after running from subway since i was a bit late, and as im telling this to her i see aka Bellissima coming up to us and offering us Aquafina bottled water, she was my savior. She seemed to be always running from place to place, she was the one one who got me VIP access and saved me from a horrible discomfort which was thirst, i feel bad now for not introducing my self and thanking her in person, i hope she can forgive me
After about two hours of waiting, as i was about to try out the booth and the line looked open in front of me, i heard the raffle gifts give out, from the tickets that everyone got at the entrance. I was listening and checking my tickets for half of the raffle event i believe and then i was called in for the gaming booth. I didnt get to win any gifts but im glad others have =) There were about eight or ten desktops with GW2 demo stacked in line of left part of the room, i ended up in the last one, that was located in the corner. That desktop was the only one that was connected to speakers instead of headphones, and my monitor was connected to a huge flat screen , and right next to me was a couching area with fans watching the game play. I ended up trying human race Elementalist for 25min and then restarted the demo to try Charr warrior for the rest of 15min that i had left. I loved the demo. Having a fan base watching my game play on those couches kind of put me in a hot seat, so i tried to kill as many mobs as i could to impress them, even got an achievement for killing bandits that tried to attack the farms.
After that i spoke to Eric, Colin and Emily they were all very friendly and enthusiastic. Colin i must say seemed to know everything lol, very energetic and informative. He was a gt guy. As he told me, that he was working with games professionally since he was 16 years old, that definitely shows. Any questions you'd throw at him he had an answer for, or he simply said we cant reveal this information yet, but sit tight, its coming =] He was a bit of a politician, never crossed the line, and didn't give a straight answer at times, but i bet GW2 staff gets prepped before hand, what to say and what not to say. I did try to squeeze some new information out of him, but he didn't budge like a brick wall.
Over all i had a great time, with vibrant fan base, informative ArenaNet staff and well planed event, what can be better :)
If you have any questions about the event please do ask, ill be more than glad to answer them to the best of my ability.
P.S. Sorry for a long wall of text, and miss spellings. English is not my first language.|||Quote:

I think you have me confused with someone else. I was not able to attend. It sounds like it was a wonderful party though!

Good taste - I approve!
