Potions should heal more "out of combat".

Since there will be potions, there is a high chance that auto-regen will be removed from the game in GW2. And this might lead to "down time". By down time I mean that the players have to sit around and rest while their hp/mp regens. This is probably the worst part of most RPGs. The key of a smooth game is the minimize "down time".
However if potions are too powerful it will throw the game out of balance. Imagine that the potions heals for 50hp a second. Way overpowered.
So what is the solution?
Potions should heal less while in combat, and heals much faster while out of combat.
This way the potions will not be overpowered during combat, but they will minimize down time after the battle so the players can move on to the next objective. So both "pot wars" and "down time" are removed.|||Uhhh....

Thankfully. I'm hoping they will take away energy potions as well, so I'm not too fond of the idea in the OP.

And with energy potions, you regenerate out of combat with energy a lot faster, so out of combat pot chugging is probably only for the impatient.|||I like my cat idea better then potions.

At which point to return your feline companion to the bag. There could be a lot of strategy about using the cat at opportune times. Semi related, I don't mind the potion gameplay that much provided the energy regen in combat is slow enough. That way it gives a more strategic element to making pushes, and a finite time for the match is built in with the inevitability of simply running out of energy.
I also think that's the first time I've seen the word inevitability when it wasn't being used quoting The Matrix.|||Just in case it hasn't been said before... there's no heal potions in GW2
The way you put it Shawn, sounds like energy potions could be fun. And yes, I think there's potential.
