I read this part and said was all like
Quote:
Finally, there will be a stronger sense of gear progression in Guild Wars 2 that simply was not the case in Guild Wars. At level 40, you should have level 40 gear, which is statistically better than level 20 gear.
So, it's come to "upgrade your gear" then, has it?
Fine, I can accept that a "lvl=(maxlvl/4)" character may have worse gear than a "lvl=maxlvl" character. The same was true in GW1. You didn't get "max armor" until you were at Drok's, Docks, or KC. (or Boreal Station at level 10 lolololol)
But the article says "that simply was not the case in Guild Wars."
So, does the article mean that some lvl 80 characters will have -statistically- better gear than other lvl 80 characters? Is there now a gear grind at max level? Will I be able to crush other max level charcters in pvp just because i have better gear than them now? Will there be a GearScore requirement for pugs? Will the entire focus of this game now become about how well you've geared your character?
Or is the article just wrong, or rather, does the article writer not remember that Yak's Bend armor is -statistically- worse than Droknar's Forge armor?
Did he just not remember that GW1 had "gear progression"? It did. I mean, it was trivial and easy to circumvent (lfr to docks lol) but it was there.
[/panic]|||Why is this bad? Do you really want to be killing mobs at 80 with the same wooden toothpick you picked up at level 3?|||I wouldn't freak out too much, it sounds like it's the same thing we have now except spread out over 80 levels instead of 20. It's an article written by a blogger (so not an official Anet source) geared towards WoW players, so its probably that he's simplifying a bit.
Also, I don't really remember the last time I bought mid-level gear. Over the last few years every time I've started a new player I generally play with beginners armor until I can get max... and I have more max weapons then I can really ever use. I imagine that won't necessarily be true in GW2.|||Quote:

I hopefully agree, and bet that the writer of this article (like many others) just didn't notice that GW1 has gear progression in it. Because, as you say:

Same here. ;)

No, I don't want to be killing mobs at 80 with the same wooden toothpick i picked up at level 3. You didn't understand me at all.|||Quote:

a sword is a sword is a sword.
I hope stats are pretty flat. I'm really tired of gear hunting games.|||Quote:

Yes, that'd be awesome.
Or more accurately, I don't want to be stuck with bland skins just because I want better stats and yet don't want to invest in a weapon I know is only temporary.
My WoW chars all look like crap because I keep using the best items I get. My blood elf has a silly hat. I mean the thing is downright ugly.
Love the graph buried in the article... it's a graph of time spent per level gained in WoW. Note the label on the Y axis.

I agree. I like hunting dragons, demons, undead and generally nasty guys. I like hunting gold and jewels and treasure, too. Because the ladies dig the fat stacks of cash.
As long as the "gear progression" stops when you're 80, and have "max gear" like everyone else, then great. Same as GW1, but maybe a bit more noticable because it's a wider arc, or because you can't just get a ferry to Consulate Docks or whatever.
I just hope that it's not "welcome to max level, now get to work on your tier 1 gear so you can go get some tier 2 gear, so you can get some tier 3 gear so you can get into PUGs and try to get some tier 4 gear, and so on. Blech.|||Given that the level cap in GW2 is so much higher, this makes sense. In GW, you could have max gear at level 1, providing you could get to it. In a game with 5 times as many levels (guessing at the number), that would seem silly. Plus, it seems like there will be WAY more content that increases in difficulty: It wouldn't really make sense if you were facing off against the Elder Dragon or a Dragon Champion wearing the same set of armor you wore while you were killing rats.
Like everyone else is saying, I hope it's not as bad as other MMOs.|||Quote:

I highly doubt that finding good weapon skins will be an issue in gw2.
And why are you making your chars wear ugly things? Do you realize how marginal gear most gear upgrades are level to level? You can usually go several levels until you find something that looks decent, and is an upgrade. It amuses me that people complain about the need for gear "in games like Warcraft", and yet there are guilds that have killed Yogg-Saron using only blue items. Playing well makes up for any advantages those 15 year old heroic raid gearscore grinders can get.|||You do have a good point about gear... but the temptation is there nevertheless when you mix artstyle and stats. I'd rather artstyle be separate from stats, for example if I can transfer the stats of new drops onto old skins.
Without paying cash.
