What do you guys think of the opportunity of being evil. How evil do you want to get? I am sure most players would want to be good. But should there be room for the players who choose to do evil?
There are multiple levels of being evil.
1) Renegade. You character is not really evil. But he/she talks mean and doesn't make too many friends. He/she will punish evil do-ers without mercy. He/she will use torture and other means to get information out from the evil enemy.
2) Anti-hero. Once again your character is not really evil. But he/she will achieve his/her goals with unconventional means. These methods are often viewed as illegal, madness or outright "evil" to other people. For example, they might hold a bad guy's family hostage. They might get 10 guys killed to save thousands.
3) Opportunist. The character is good most of the time. But when the rewards are high enough the hero will do something evil. For example helping a village might earn the hero nothing but praise. Helping bandits raid a village will earn him $1 million. The hero might then choose to do the evil act. Only a few people would know of this hero's evil acts.
4) Pure villain. The character has the right to join the evil side altogether. He/she will either assist the evil "boss", or he/she will be that evil boss altogether. Everyone knows this character is evil.
Of course to support the idea of being evil, the rewards for being evil must be great. Being evil means he/she will be hated by most people, and so he/she will need to be rewarded enough to justify the act. Either money, power, fame, self righteousness or fighting abilities.
What do you guys think?|||A bit redundant since Anet has stated that there will be no true evil choice. Everyone is a hero, some are just more agressive then others.|||There are many pure RPGs out there that allow this. It's just way too ambitious for a mmorpg to include alignment. Soon, maybe one or two mmo generations away, that level of complexity will be possible, but don't expect in in a GW2 expansion.|||The first 3 choices, I could see happening. Actually, the first choice is already in GW1 (Nightfall, one of Dunkoro's Building the Base quests), though we don't really see the result of it. But all of them will have a "happy" ending, only the way how to achieve that ending is different.|||I've see Jack Bauer on TV, I don't want to wslk in his footsteps.
I don't want to be evil or good, but I want to see the consequences of my actions. AFAIK GW2 will have that and that will be great.
PS: We once tried to have a group setup with evil, greedy, selfish and own-agenda-driven characters with our Pen&Paper RPG crew and it turned out to disturb the flow of game play a lot: Being evil lost its charm when you "had to terrorize" the next farmer you met.|||Up to and including "anti-hero", because they are still heroes, even if they're not the pearly white paragons of virtue (eg, they punch people in the face sometimes). Anything past that is a definite negative.|||It is a mute point, but if I had my way...
Well lets just say "Saw" would be tame by comparison.
Also I have done evil groups in the pen & paper rpg and like was said earlier it is generally disruptive and unless you have a group that can really handle it well. My friend and I used to be so good at it that we would cause our fellow players to have nightmares.
Ahh the good ol' days of pen & paper games. I still play them but it is just not the same anymore with all the technology and such.|||I want to be a mean bastard.
Voted for Only do good. Can't be evil at all.|||I voted "Pure Villain", even though it's a moot point. I played Oblivion and both recent Fallout games that way; it was a blast (in one case, literally! ).
Sadly, Anet has already decided it's not going to happen. I understand their reasoning, but it's still a disappointment.|||I chose the Renegade, sometimes helping the greater good require drastic means.
My toon will be a combination of good and renegade, she will be lovely to everyone who is nice to her, will do her best to help everyone, but will use every means possible to smite evil.
I dont know if i will be able to play this role in GW2 but i want my toon to act like an assassin against evil.
