In the Engineer skills videos, we can hear some skritt talking amongst themselves. They're speaking English and we can fully understand them. If you don't yet see where I'm going with this, here's a quote from the lore article about the skritt to refresh your memory :
Quote:
Speaking in chirps and squeaks so fast that it sounds like buzzing to human ears, they share information, parse knowledge, and determine actions between themselves.
At first I thought this was only for the purpose of the skill videos, but according to the recently posted engineer FAQ, it's an actual voiced skritt conversation in the game :
Quote:
Q: We noticed the skritt chatting in the engineer skill videos. Do mobs really chat while in combat, or was this just added for the video?
A: Yes, a lot of the mobs have scenes and chatter lines. Those skritt lines come straight from the game.
Seems pretty darn inconsistent with the lore as far as I'm concerned. Am I the only one bothered by this?|||I'm slightly embarrassed to admit I never thought of this... I suppose no one else has either? Yeah, I completely agree with you though.|||We've heard the skritt speak understandably before, in one of the thief skill videos. I don't see a problem with this.
For one thing, they have to be able to communicate with races that don't speak in chirps and squeaks. We know there will be events in which we can choose to aid the skritt, which would be a bit difficult to pull off if we can't talk to them. I don't know of any reason why the skritt couldn't be bi-lingual.
Second, it is possible that the fast-style skritt speech is not used for ordinary conversation among themselves, but only for group thought. Perhaps group thought is used only in brief bursts, or only at times of real need, with regular speech used at other times. Perhaps the skritt are capable of doing both at once, speaking normally over the buzzing undertone of the group communication. Dolphins, for example, can communicate (whistles, grunts, etc.) and navigate (click) at the same time.|||Quote:

Of course, I don't have a problem with the skritt speaking common when talking to other races, but it seems strange that we'd be able to understand them when they're talking amongst themselves when the lore article clearly states otherwise.

I suppose I could accept the fact that they can do both at once, though it feels like a cheap justification for letting the players follow some skritt-to-skritt conversations.|||Engineers have developed babelfish. Except it's babelclockwork. Same thing, except somewhat more painful to shove in your ear.|||Am I the only one that felt bad for them in that video? Here they are, talking about fleas and completely minding their own business, when out of nowhere, some one starts lobbing grenades at them...|||Well, you wouldn't have the element of surprise... if you waited for them to attack you first!!
I figure they did bad stuff to deserve it... otherwise you'd probably be given the chance to ally with them.|||I gotta agree with the OP, they are going to all this trouble to come up with this great lore, and hoping will read up on it and immerse ourselves in the great lore. Then they turn around and break the lore they created. It breaks the immersion and it makes it difficult to keep an interest in the lore.
I don't know if it is a game breaker, but if we continue to see examples of this, it will break it for me. Crossing my fingers that this is the exception rather than the rule.|||Quote:

I'm trying to imagine a babelfish being steam-powered, and that really isn't ending well.|||Quote:

Welcome to Guild Wars, they have been doing this since EotN at least (a bit in NF as well).
