[:1]Point of this thread is to give ANet some cool ideas for events. Be they small or be they big, as long as they be dynamic, all bets are off. Come on fellow gamers show them what you've got.
"Dead in the Water"
Event chain started out on the open seas near Lion's Arch. A full moon has risen in the night sky. Whispers abound of dead men drifting the seas. Someone spots a group of sea gulls circling around, slowly swooping down. Going to investigate he comes across a man tied to a barrel, unconscious. Moving closer he notices a message branded in the man's back: "Don't meddle with a dead man's chest." Signed only with a skull and crossbones.
What does the player do...
Kill the man:
As the man sinks to Davey Jones' locker*, his murderer swimming to shore, a cry of agony pierces all of Lion's Arch, rousing its citizens. As they look out to see, an apparition rises from the depths, tidal waves start capsizing boats, destroying beach hovels. As the murderer reaches the shore, the ghost follows suit seeking nothing, wanting nothing, only yearning for one thing: revenge. And if the townsfolk do not kill him, he's liable to kill anyone that comes in his way.
Rescue him:
The morning after the man is brought to shore and hospitalized, a pirate ship anchours before the harbour, blocking passage. They claim the man was a thief who stole an item of utmost value to them shortly before they threw him afterboard. They demand compensation, and they demand his corpse.
Unfortunately for Lion's Arch, the Thief has made off. In the state he was in, he couldn't have gone far and the Pirates refuse to leave until the city delivers, blocking valuable materials from arriving in the city. After a week of wanton searching, LA's rougher denizens decide to take matters in their own hands causing the Pirate ship to leave - with only half a crew.
Leave him be:
Nothing happens. If nobody else interacts with him, the event does not take place. The account is awarded the "total lamer" award.
*I've been wanting to use that phrase since like, forever. Awesomesauce.|||I'll just go ahead and say I'd love events where healers are useful =D
Otherwise, I trust in ANet to make fun stuff...|||I like your description of an event. That would be a cool event to see in the game.
As a side note, there has been mentioned different "evil" factions for all the races except for the Asura (or maybe they have been mentioned and I missed it). The charr have the Flame Legion, the norn have the Sons of Svanir, the sylvari have the Nightmare Court and the humans have bandits (this may seem a little weak compared to the others so maybe they have another one). Do the asura have a hidden college which they find disdainful? Or do they try to sabotage each other?
An event I would like to see is a ghost town or ghost area event. Eg an area or town that only appears under certain conditions and then players get to find out why it is appearing.|||I'll don the Anet hat for a moment:
Quote:
"Whilst it is fun and certainly educational to read about what some of the playerbase would like to see as content please remember that we cannot use any of your ideas for legal reasons. If there is any comparison drawn between an idea of yours and something that happens in game it is purely coincidental and should not be taken as anything other than collective independent thought - based on particular stimuli - culminating at around the same time. That said, we may run a few competitions which will allow players the chance to write an event or design a weapon and they will be duly rewarded for said content.
PS: Really sorry about the NCSoft security stuff, they've got some meanies holding us hostage and theres nothing we can do about it."
Now that that's out of the way here's my, now apparently very tl;dr, idea (with more backstory than I knew I was capable of):
Blizzard blown buff
Far into the Shiverpeaks there is an icy cold point straddling and concealing a volcano beneath it. This is where one of the Bloodstones was placed to keep it from the hands of man after it's escape from Abaddon's Mouth; in the fires of molten magma hidden underneath a freezing desolate mountain.
The mountain itself is littered with insanely powered beings of all types twisted to madness by their lust for the potential power of the stone which has yet to see a drop of blood and, as such, has accumulated such potential as to rival the gods themselves.
The mountain is only heard of by way of rumour. So inaccessible is it that the closest man has ever gotten to it was by way of a large tower constructed at the very perimeter of it's subdued range - establishing a subtle connection to it through the murder of a dragon in the catacombs of Ascalon and whose blood supplied the magic required for the Amethyst wine grape - binding all those who drank it to the cause and generating power from their slowly dying spirits.
The tower, built in the aptly named Wizard's Folly, was used to try and commune with the stone, seek it's power and to try and divine a way to access the source against the impossible odds of surviving the hostile environment protecting it. The tower failed in its purpose though, only giving fuel to the Bloodstone via its spirit generated power and causing it to grow stronger and more hungry for blood. This all-consuming appetite made those bound to it by the wine corrupt their sensibilities and threw the land of Ascalon into savage war. So quick was the idea from concept to failure that only 5 seasons had passed turning the peaceful kingdom into fearful war zone.
At this point a young Prince, who had been overseas in Elona on political affairs, returned to the kingdom. The damage done to the hierarchy of command was so absolute that very little news of how it had come about was available. He, and a hand picked few, took up the mantle of Ascalon's Chosen and headed North and into the Shiverpeaks.
Eventually finding an uneasy alliance with the Dwarves the party fought their way South through the worst areas of the Shiverpeaks and eventually found the mountain they had hoped not to. The young royal received word that his father, the King, had been murdered and that he was now ruler of Ascalon. The position had never tasted so bitter to him and yet his desire to restore his people overwhelmed him. They fought on and lost most of their number whilst securing a port on the frozen water hoping for reinforcements by way of messenger bird.
Unknown to the newly titled King at this time a young princess who had been quite taken with him in Elona was arriving in Lions Arch, under the guise of a royal decree for the Fraternal Order of Bakers and Brewers to further their Autumnal alliances but also with the hopes of marrying him. When she found out that an army had been dispatched by navy, just the day before, she had her captain take their ship to where her true love was.
Despair and torment haunted the dreams of the King and his throng of heroic companions. The Dwarves spoke of a prophecy in which this would be the first steps. Morale shattered and with frost depleting their already wavering health the troupe took to the mountain at first sunrise after their reserve compliment had arrived. Vicious battle ensued and a clear path of death lead all the way to a labyrinth of caves. Unable to see their enemies the group was quickly eradicated into just the King and his Dwarven companion. They fought back all until they were standing on top of the Bloodstone feeling it's meretricious power lust. Surrounded by heat and with a few shafts of light penetrating the mountain above them they finally conquered their opposition and lay down to rest and assess their situation.
As they slept the Princess appeared, having followed their trail of destruction and had her staff prepare them some food. When they awoke the King was overjoyed to see the young lady with whom he had been so enamoured with less than a year ago. Famished he and his Dwarven companion feasted on breads, meats and meads and discussed how to destroy the Bloodstone and return order to Ascalon. It was agreed that gunpowder would be the best option and that, if begun quickly enough, they should be able to shift it to the cave before many new beasts were attracted to the Bloodstone.
The King took a regiment of the Princess's reserve and quickly made way for the nearest Dwarven town. Upon their return though he found his Dwarven companion dead, poisoned from the food he had eaten. The Princess was unconscious on the Bloodstone and her remaining soldiers were missing. Awakened she told of how they had turned on her and were on their way to stop the King and his men from returning and destroying the stone.
The King dispatched the men to keep an eye out for the corrupted soldiers and comforted the Princess. Whilst stood facing his dead companion and reflecting on how this could have happened he was beheaded by the Princess, his head bounced into the molten lava and burned away. The Princess cackled, she had the Bloodstone now and all the power she could ever want. She sat the headless body upright and placed a pumpkin between its shoulders. She teased and ridiculed her former love for being weak and pathetic, whilst herself not seeing his blood fill the contours of the stone.
With a massive lash of thunderous noise the King's body stood upright, apparently dazed, and scratched his squash like chin. All the power of the Bloodstone had been drained into him and the Princess was now free from her corrupt greed. She wailed and begged for things to be different, she loved the King and was sorry for what she had done. The King merely laughed and said she can wail for all time as far as he's concerned and banished her to the wind. He surveyed all around him and mused on his success and his failure and exploded into laughter which, through the powers of the Bloodstone, caused all those previously infected by Amethyst wine to laugh themselves to death in a fit of convulsions.
EVENT:
More people in an area are of the male gender:
The remainder of Princess Rose's troops have become roaming spirits of tragic comedy in this frozen tundras plane. Dispatch them before they cause your character to die laughing. Be mindful of the Princess's wailing winds of sorrow, it can bring down your humour levels but can also cause you to die of despair.
More people in an area of the female gender:
The remainder of Princess Rose's troops have become undead denizens of depression. Cheer them up with jokes before they cause your character to overdose on obsession of oblivion. Be mindful of the Princess's manic laughing, it will cheer you up but can also cause you to die laughing.
Absolutely equal amounts of male/female:
Game is a bogey - RUN!! (Mixed event with both versions existing)
Set skills male: Dead Pan Stare, Tumbleweed, Spoil Punchline, Rotten Tomatoes, Cricket Noise, Monologue With The Manus, Meta Mate, Sorry - Wasn't Listening, Taxi! (speed buff), That's what she said (Heal).
Set skills female: Rimshot, Contagious Chuckle, Crying Shame, My Dog Has No Nose, Whose On First?, Presearing Called And Want 'X' Back..., Fourth Wall, Knee Slapper, Cheque Please! (Speed Buff), Bright Eyes (Heal).
So a boys versus girls event, whoever there is most of chooses the event. This could alternate as-and-when it makes for the best comedic value. So tons of guys show up and yet the event is female friendly. Keeps people on their toes and also stops farming builds being made too easily.
Well that wasn't the worst waste of an hour ever. Great idea Akirai, sorry it ran on a bit.
-Art|||Some past historical events from the bad guys' point of view would be nice.
Example:
Don't just hear that Shiro killed the emperor. Who likes to read? Relive Shiro's memory. Play as Shiro and kill all of the emperor's personal guards and then kill the emperor. Finally face Archemorus, Saint Viktor and Vizu by yourself in the fatal battle.
Play as the powerful Vizier Khilbron as he leads a group of personal guards into the great Catacombs beneath Arah to search for the Lost Scrolls. Experience The Cataclysm first hand as Arah sinks into the sea and watch Abaddon transform Vizier Khilbron into the Undead Lich. Finally play as the Undead Lich as he murdered any surviver of Orr; transforming them into the undead to assist him in finding the powerful Scepter of Orr.
Play as General Kahyet though her decades of battles. Watch her disappointment in the 5 gods grow as she saw the gradual decline of Kournan, such as losing major battles against the "lowly" Centaurs. Her own lover, a firm believer of the 5 gods, was killed in one such battle. Finally see Abaddon assisting her in her war against the Centaurs and she became a firm believer in Abaddon. And she transfered her believes to the child Varesh Ossa.|||Art, that event would be awesome. I thought you were building up to some kind of epic "Bloodstone unleashed on the world thing", but it turned out quite differently

I'd assume there is a corrupt college somewhere. Ah, here it is. Doesn't list any sources though.
The Key
The Key. A Magical item with the power to unlock anything, from the vaulted doorways of the Human palaces to the Golden Gates of the Hall of Heroes itself. It is a much sought after item, rarely carried by only the most powerful enemies and anyone lucky enough to find this gem is stalked, day and night, by every nefarious council looking for this mere trinket. Mastering this trinket teaches anyone how to Open the Gates to Heaven and Hell, temporarily granting him mighty boons and allies. But remember: you will always be chased - everywhere, anytime, until its destruction.
Destruction of the Key
The Key can be destroyed only in the Fires of Mount Dhuum, on the remote Ring of Fire, hard to reach at any time, let alone when chased by ships of every faction and colour. When reached, all you need to do is throw away your power...
The Keyman is killed by...
The Flame Legion
The Flame Legion uses the Key to unlock the Doors of Komalie, unleashing their Titan Gods upon the world again.
The Bandit Army
The Bandit Army starts an assault on the State coffers. If not stopped, taxes (and more importantly for a wandering adventurer, merchant prices within the region) are doubled.
The Inquest
The Inquest uses the Key to unlock the Bloodstones' Magical energy, hoping to control it and through it, the Eternal Alchemy. Failing in their goal, all flow of magic is disrupted until the Bloodstones' might is locked back safely.
The Nightmare Court
The Nightmare Court remains silent until the time is right - stalking the night, they'll unlock everyone's fears, forcing them in a Nightmarish coma. Find and capture the Nightshades stalking the Coastal cities until you take the Key from them.
Sons of Svanir
Applying the power of Jormag to the Key, the Sons of Svanir reverse its power, locking all Norn into their twisted image, locking them to Jormag in their madness. The attempt is only partially succesful. All Norn within the area unwillingly become Nornbears - until the Key is taken from the Sons' totem.
Notes: the Key can be equipped as an environmental weapon.
Only one Key can exist in a world (server) at any time.
Its droprate is very, very, very, very low, and only from tough bosses.|||I'm glad you like the event Akirai. Your key one would be a doozy to accidentally get.
Could you trade the key for gold or whatnot?

This is a bit of a tangent, but...
I always pictured asura as an exemplar of D&D's "True Neutral" alignment. There may not be any outright evil asura, but neither are there many truly good ones (Vekk being an exception).
From what we've seen in GW1, asura are mostly focused on their own research, disliking to cooperate with others and often being outright scornful of each other's work. (A particularly powerful asura may even call in favors to see their rivals disreputed, see Trial of Zinn). Their opinion of other sentient races is even worse- they view them as slave labor, experiment subjects, or both, and when an event threatens the entire world they don't care until it affects them directly as individuals, or it gives them a chance to showcase their abilities. On the other hand, their complete devotion to their research means they rarely have reason to be outright malicious towards others.
Oola's a prime example. She set up her lab in the middle of nowhere to stay away from the other asura, and she abused her only assistant to the point that he ran away and threatened to burn the lab down. She refuses to help with the GOLEM project until the player character implies her skills have atrophied with age, and even in later missions she's more concerned with the preservation of her golems than the safety of the other parties involved. When Zinn showcases his skill by creating several particularly powerful golems, she retaliates by bribing the asuran council, the victims of the attacks, and just about everyone else to see him exiled.
It should be interesting to see how asura change between games, since they'll need to in order to interact with other races, and especially if we want to see believable asuran heroes (or even villains).
Oh, and I'm dead set on making my main an asura. Make of that what you will.
EVENTS
To actually contribute to the thread at hand... I can picture asura paying adventurers to gather information on/sabotage their rivals, or working as slave labor for whatever experiment they're working on (similar to the bounty-givers' "Kill all these monsters so we can make this machine"). We also might get to break into the abandoned lab of a long-deceased asura (such as the ones we got to see in GW1).|||Quote:

I guess one way to make healing an event is to set it up as some sort of a resource / micro management mini game where you have injured people filed through with varying conditions and you have to
a) instantly prioritize which target needs healing / status effects removal
b) actively manage energy and possibly fatigue (similar to exhaustion in gw)
No idea how the story should go, could be as specific or general as can be, I guess.|||Quote:

I can't imagine anyone wanting to trade the key in for mere Gold. Come on, you get the power to open the GATES TO HEAVEN AND HELL and you wanna trade it in for gold? Plus destroying it is completing an event as well (rewarding you with gold and karma), and theoretically, it would be possible to trade the thing with other players for financial incentives...

"Stark Raving"
Mad Skritt have started streaming into the Glade, first a mere brook slowly developing in a cascading waterfall enveloping the citizenry in their insane cackles. Can you find a cure?
Death
Always an end to any mortal suffering, Grenth weighs the mad down into his Underworld. The Skritt are no longer friendly to you and your allies.
Finding the Cure
After long research, a single Sylvari and a single Elementalist spell of healing appears to cure the madness and slowly the Skritt return to their senses. It appears a branch of the evil Asuran Inquest organization was experimenting on the innocent Skritt, trying to turn their weaker mental fortitude into slavery, trying to force the Skritt to wield new, experimental Stark Suits. Though these Skritt are cured, the experimental Suits continue to be built. One Skritt will lead you there, so you may try and stop them. Will you heed his call?
> Heeding the Call (follow up event)
The Skritt leads you out of the Glade, leading you towards Rata Sum. Halfway there, you are ambushed by Inquest Golems. As you defeat the opposition, the Skritt runs off to their leader and grovels that his treachery was discovered and to please let him live. The Inquisitors are of no such kind inclination. Forced into the experimental Stark Suit, the Skritt is empowered beyond the Inquisitors dreams - and turned stark raving mad attacking anything on sight. Kill or cure, release him from his misery.
Note: curing Stark Suit Skritt allows you and your allies to lead him to the Skritt city where he will be imprisoned and your party raised in Skritt standing.
Assuming of course the Skritt city is at that point open to outsiders.
Killing Stark Suit Skritt does not affect your standing with the Skritt race either way.
