Arena.Net | Shadows in the Water The Krait

Arena.Net has decided to grace us with more lore information on the critters that walk (or swim) Tyria's world. This time, Ree Soesbee talks about the Krait.

On a personal note, I think it's great to see the world so fleshed out in terms of lore and culture in Tyria. Rarely do other game makers release so much lore information. But it makes the world come more to life. So thumbs up for that. I also wonder if we will soon learn more information about underwater mechanics since the Krait do spend a significant portion of their lives in the water.|||Love this part:

Furthermore, unknown to the krait people, the priests ensure the continuation of their power by subtly changing the words of the massive memorized texts, ensuring that whatever interpretation they require is upheld somewhere in the canon.|||Quote:

Exactly what I think when I read a blog post like this.|||I literally just reread "Dagon" by Lovecraft last night so I was already completely in the mindset for a creepy direction to the krait along those lines
I cannot think of the deep sea without shuddering at the nameless things that may at this very moment be crawling and floundering on its slimy bed, worshipping their ancient stone idols and carving their own detestable likenesses on submarine obelisks of water-soaked granite. I dream of a day when they may rise above the billows to drag down in their reeking talons the remnants of puny, war-exhausted mankind --of a day when the land shall sink, and the dark ocean floor shall ascend amidst universal pandemonium. -Lovecraft, "Dagon"|||Quote:

So just like real life.|||Quote:

We approached their focus on religion very cautiously, knowing that the word prophets would bring to mind modern religious references. It is important to note that we in no way want to compare krait fanaticism to any real-world faith. The prophets of the krait are false religious figures invented by a ruling priest caste to maintain their control. No part of the krait culture or religion is based on, or intended to resemble, any real-world parallel.

Hahahaha. Ironically this seems to resemble some current world parallels quite accurately, even if it "wasn't intended".|||Quote:

Krait have never developed a written language. They have excellent memories, and their religious texts are memorized, Vedic-fashion, by the priesthood.

Um...I thought this seemed a bit inconsistent. Anyone else notice that?|||I took it as meaning they have an oral tradition, same as the Celts. "Texts" is just a bad choice of word. "Teachings" may have been better.
I guess this means those weren't Naga in the trailers.|||Yeah, I like how they apologize about religions and say they don't mean one in particular. Do they really have to apologize for this?
I'm still waiting for them to apologize about talking about trinity play (and how GW2 doesn't include it) and that they don't mean to point to a particular MMO.|||I dont' take what they are saying as appologies, but explainantions that they are feel are needed in light of the uber-PC world we live in. I can't blame them for wanting to pre-CMA in this day and time....
I do find it difficult to believe they are highly sklilled in mathematics and numerology if they don't have an form of written language. How exactly would you do math without being able to write? I guess it could be possible, but I wonder if any historical evidence exists of examples that some RL cultures managed this n the past (rather doubtful if they didn't have a writting system...). Just a thought.
