[:1]Please join me in welcoming Lensor to our Moderating Staff. She has kindly agreed to help us out by acting as Moderator for the Guild Wars 2 News Forum.
Welcome Lensor!|||Congratulations Lensor.|||Congrats on your new powers. Use them wisely and thus for evil purposes only.|||Gratz Lensor! With all the good work you did for Dii, I am confident you'll be a great mod.|||Congrats! This should be one step towards progress!|||Congratulations!|||So we have a penguin admin and now we have a cat mod as well? What's next? A zebra mod? This board, I tell you...
Anyway, congratulations!|||Spoiler

No votes for pony admins? Well I suppose a zebra is pretty close to a pony... but still....
Also congrats Lensor. ;>|||Thanks!

Anyways, with the ambition of having the incgamers News forum as a go-to place for GW2 news (and also giving the main page content creators a great intelligence gathering recource for stuff to write about), I hope y'all will throw news my way if you stumble across any.

Community Video: Why we love it!

[:1]So, started out making this a news item since it made me all warm and fuzzy inside, but since it is not news per se, I am sticking it here in the discussion forum.

Maybe there are other videos like this out there?
(apart from the gazillion ambassador contest ones of course )

Not busy

[:1]The recent brain doodle written by Ravious made me wonder, what were the big things they revealed and could it give any insights on possible future information.
I made some graphs as well but whatever, the tables in the screenshot:
Big news stuff (excluding professions and races), starting with the first original trailer, counting the days that passed since then. I put in races of Tyria as well, but didn't include it in calculating WvWvW and possible release. The grouped (II) data is weird, which is why I grouped them together and took their average. I guess underwater combat got delayed for some reason where the PvP team was on schedule for the conventions. Grouped it shows there are about 156 days between each major reveal. So which big reveals are left, WvWvW and the final release. Which puts the release date of the game in 2012 about a month later than the original guild wars was released (28-04-2005). If the release of a release date is also big news stuff on their calendar the release would be somewhere in October. However, nothing like a good summer holiday to get your players addicted!
In all honesty I didnt try to make anything out of races, because it just didnt make sense at first sight and they are all announced anyways. Probably the Sylvari redesign messed anything logical up anyways. This obviously weakens my other dates
Professions, we have 7 already and are eager to hear about the last one. It took 273 days to get from the Elementalist to the day before the reveal of the Guardian. So another 273 days until the day before the reveal of the Mesmer results in 27 October 2011. 27 October will also be the day they announce when closed beta will take place. So it will be a big bang!
Well, its all pure speculation and probably bull****. But I was bored and decided to share it with you guys. If they are true to what they say Guild Wars 2 will be released when its ready.|||First note: release won't be in May of this year...
The rest, I mostly agree with. Except the release date itself. I think you should take into account the other chapters. Prophecies and Factions both arrived on April 28th. Nightfall came on October 27th (exactly half a year later...).
So, I think announcement of last profession in October, release on April 28th, 2012.|||Quote:

I have been wondering this myself. However they could be planning to have a completely different anniversary/birthday date for Guild Wars 2. The work load of having to have birthday celebrations coincide would be massive. They may want to spread it out a bit.|||The way I see it, there are two times a year when things can be released for the best effect. One is coming up soon: time for people to do some christmas shopping. But for a game like GW2, this might not be the best time as most people will want it from day 1 (and don't want it laying under the christmas tree!). The other is at the end of April, start of May. As Juiced said: no thing better than a summer holidays to get your people hooked!
Don't get me wrong, I'd love for it to be released tomorrow! But I'd be so unhappy if it were after May 2012...|||It has been confirmed that GW2 will NOT be relased April 28. Since they do not want the anniversaries to coincide.|||So October 27th next year? That'd put as much space as possible between the anniversaries.|||Quote:

That would also be one day after LotRO's 5-year anniversary.|||yeah sometime middle to late next year was my ORIGINAL date for its release when I was asked 4 years ago!!! (should play the lottery----)|||I think given the "closed beta this year, depending on that, open beta, depending on that, release" line they've been repeating lately, I think Q2 next year is a lot more likely than Q3-4. It's very unlikely to go into closed beta this year and need 9 months before release.
I hate to keep bringing up LotRO, but it's what I have the most experience with. It started closed alpha in August 06. Closed beta Sept 06. Their open beta was only the pre-launch two week head start, but the last few weeks of closed beta might as well have been open. And it launched April 27, 2007. Eight months total beta time there, and it was in a MUCH less complete state than GW2 already is (hell, they didn't even give all the classes their L40-50 skills until the first few updates after launch).
If closed beta starts in Oct-Nov, I think we'll see a June release at the latest.|||there is something awfully idiotic about the tablet, look at release date and then at "reveal last profession" and you'll see the person making this doesn't really thinks things trough.

What feature would you "import" to GW2 from another game?

[:1]As we all know here, GW2 is shaping up to be one kickass game. And ANet has always been open with how they are looking at other games for inspiration, not only in the MMO genre but all over. From FPS game lobbies to the Borderland-esque downed system.

So, given what we know of GW2 today, what feature(s) would you like ANet to "borrow" from another game?

Personally I would love to see a Charriocart minigame with unlockable cart skins.|||Class switching of the type seen in FPS games instead of having to have a PvE char when you just want to PvP.|||Quote:

Class switching of the type seen in FPS games instead of having to have a PvE char when you just want to PvP.

Actually, this is something that I've considered as well. Or in the way that if you want to pvp, you have to make a new char every time you want to change roles.
E.g. in TF2, switching chars is as easy as pressing a button and choosing one. Though in TF2, they have the same looks (hats notwithstanding) for each player of same class and choosing weapons takes only a few seconds, if you even want to switch them. But in GW2, there's different race/profession combos, skills, weapons, traits, attributes etc. to choose from. Templates help, but you need to invest more in to each character, so in that sense having to make one is more justified. And each profession should be capable of doing any job with right tweaking, so there's no need to switch to a demo to blow the sentries or medic to heal. But it can get annoying if you want to do an another class.|||Quote:

So you click once for race and once for profession, and then you can use a PvP item screen like in GW1 to create gear. Setting your build can be done manually or via template.|||Quote:

Then there's the looks. But if it's just a random pvp char that gets deleted the same day, a randomizer should do fine, with the option to fine tune.|||A "Boss key".
That'd be swell please-a-thank-you loverly Anet people.

Looks aren't tied to class anymore. Racial skills are disabled in PvP. Allowing characters to switch classes in PvP isn't a UI problem and would be awesome.|||Looks are tied to weight class though. Or at least armor looks are. So you could not make an elementalist a warrior without also swapping out all his or her gear.|||Quote:

But what if you want to change your race? Maybe you could save some "pvp-racial looks" that are automatically used when making a pvp-char. But isn't this topic about taking ideas, not coming up with new ones?|||Actually, I thought this topic would be easy, but I cant seem to really think of many features from other games, especially MMOs, that would, imo, make GW2 better.

ANet, what have you done!?

Maybe..a Portal gun?

Anyone else disappointed in Asura week so far

[:1]I have found the Asura week releases thus far disappointing. It seems to me like they are treating the Asura almost like a comic relief type of race.
Like I said it is more a feeling than anything I can directly point to and say that's what I am talking about. It just feels like they don't take the Asura seriously and if they don't, how are we suppose to view them as anything more than a joke.
The new look is somewhat cartoonish, the article about the lore by Jeff Grubb just seems childish and feels weak. Even the conversation pieces today make me feel like I am listening to little kids. How exactly am I suppose to take this race seriously.
I am interested to hear others opinions. I really want to take them seriously, I mean I reserved a name specifically for an Asura. I just hope I am wrong.|||Uhh, they've said several times that the Asura aren't meant to be taken seriously.
/thread|||Uhh...Dwayna help you if you DON'T take them seriously, bookah.|||I really like that Asura are the comic relief type of race.|||Asurans remind me of Invader Zim, only actually smart. I've liked them so far. Maybe their disposition is not to be taken seriously (and certainly their insults shouldn't be taken that way... they're just mouthy), but as a race in itself they are pretty important. I imagine they're going to want to see the Dragon threat downed as much as any other race, especially considering they're basically refugees.|||Well then, this is one race I won't be playing. It is bad enough dealing with all the jerks in pre searing spewing off at the mouth trying to get dhuum'd. Why would I want to play a race where players are likely going to be encouraged for that. This race will likely end up being played by immature teenagers.
I just don't understand why you would create a race to be laughed at and not be taken seriously. I think that will undermine confidence in the game as a whole. Just my opinion, so don't jump down my throat if you disagree, but instead please state your points so that maybe I can understand why people would want this.|||Quote:

This race will likely end up being played by immature teenagers.

And 30-something parents like myself...
I think you're looking at just the comic aspects and not the rest of the race. Yes, their voices are a little higher pitched than the other races. They're smaller, so their vocal chords are shorter, so that's a given. Yes, they're snarky, but they're not flippant. Yes, they have silly animations. Have you see the way their bodies are shaped? Of course they move strangely. However, if you read the Mr Sparkles story, you would be wise to the fact that not taking an asura seriously is a very dangerous mistake.
Think of the asura as subterranean Tyrion Lannisters. Sure, they're easy to make fun of given what they look like and their overall demeanor, but you do so at your own peril.|||It's a game...they're funny. I like fun in my game.|||Quote:

I think the immature teenagers are more likely to choose:
Norn : BIG AND STRONG, because teenagers want to feel big (lol over generalisation) .
Sylvari : The 'cool', mysterious, exotic, special race.
Charr: See Norn, but with cat-ness.
Asuran are the less cool, but oddly threatening with their superior intellect, kinda race. Unlikely to be picked up by a mind which just wants to be all big and cool and special and different. But that's just how I see it.
I'll be playing an Asuran Thief for sure, I've said this ever since they announced Asuran as a playable race (although I did say Asuran Assassin back then...). I loved the Asura the first time I met them, their quick wit and incredible stubbornness (and resilience) made me love them, despite their faults.
Honestly I think the contrast between having such a smart race that is so diminutive and odd looking is a selling point. Usually, the small races are portrayed as having different sorts of values in MMOs, while the smart races are usually the more 'exotic', mysterious, and dark types. It's a nice change.|||I think what Khanisaurus is trying to say is that jerks who like to call others noobs will be more likely to play this race and that the more people role play them, the more likely those people will sound like jerks. Maybe the npcs themselves won't be bad that way (I figure they'll make me laugh more than anything) but I can see why he has reservations on how the asuran pc community will be acting.

Charr Plushie world tour!

[:1]So, seeing this, I got this idea...

I would like to challenge all the people who buys a Charr Plushie, to take (at least) one picture featuring the Charr in front of some place where they live, and post it in this thread!

I cant wait to see all the places the little guy gets to see!

(And yes, I could not resists, I have ordered one. So a picture will be posted from Stockholm once it arrives )|||Like that idea. I'll be ordering one this afternoon (love those friday afternoons where I'm home and my hubby as still at work!), so you can expect a picture from here too.|||Hmm... I think taking a picture of the Charr plushie at UCF in Orlando would be a good idea... or at least, would make some question my manliness... I'm kidding of course, I'll take a picture of it. Somewhere in Orlando.|||It's topics like this that make me love GWOnline so much, so much positive thinking and creativity here compared to other sites.
Since i asked for this as a Christmas gift, i wont be able to contribute till Christmas sadly, but i shall take part as soon as i get one.
As i mentioned in the Charr plush news topic, this has the potential to be a big viral campaign if enough people get behind it and take part, if it gets big enough, Kotaku or possibly some other large media news site might pick up on the story and help spread the word around and get more people interested in Guild Wars 2 or at least in the Charr Plushies.
Great idea Lensor, i really hope a lot of people get behind this when they receive their cuddly little friends!
- Tsukasa|||Well, I caved in and bought it. Now the waiting starts. I guess I have to get a picture then.|||I am buying one...but since the forum doesnt allow me to post pics---you will just have to image mine.|||What do you mean, can't post pics? Just upload it somewhere and use the [img] tags..|||sorry I dont trust those 'sites' for uploading images---never will. and since my own website doesnt have anything like that......nope, no images shall be uploaded.|||How would uploading a pic to a forum's server be any different than putting it on imgur? I'm so confused..|||tinypic and photobucket are both fine.
This is an awesome idea. I have pics of my plush around my room... that's not very exciting though.
Also, where I live is really boring.
Maybe I could take a pic of Charr and me sipping tea.

About the voices - roundup

[:1]So now that we've had all the race weeks, it is easier to take an overall look of the different voices in the game.

For reference, the ANet blog posts where race voices were featured:
Human
Norn
Charr
Sylvari
Asura
In addition, there is this voice design blog post with some extra clips.

So what do we think?

Personally I think that the Asura voice is the one that feels most believable. Although overall I like the actual voices. Where it is not as great though is the actual flow. I think a lot of the dialogue still feels "unnatural", as in really feels like text being read out loud in stead of actual flowing conversations. If this is due to the writing, or direction, or both, I cant really say. And I would like at least some of the races to feel a bit more "americanized".

I guess it is kinda late for that, but getting help from professional TV writers (or even better TV writers from animated shows) and/or directors I think would do a great deal to really get that "flow".|||I have no problems with any of the voices.
However, I will say I expected the Norn to have slightly deeper voices and the Sylvari to almost have a...ring...to their voice. Overall though, not bad, IMO.|||Quote:

And I would like at least some of the races to feel a bit more "americanized".

I am not sure if I miss the "Texas Ranger".
I think we have to see and experience every piece of voice acting within the context of the cut scene or the scenery in which we can hear it.
Irish & Scottish Norns, American Humans, English Sylvari ... they might have been more distinguishable at first glance, but I have the feeling this sterotype is something ArenaNet did want for their voice acting.|||Quote:

The writing is ok (mostly, anyway, though I find many words sort of... out of place). The direction is horrible; the characters in the conversations are not responding or reacting to each other, instead simply saying their lines as if they were in a vacuum. The delivery itself, though, is actually the worst of all. When it's not completely devoid of emotion, it's filled with fake such. There are examples of good delivery, but they are rather few.|||I guess its ok, though I wouldn't have mind it if the characters wouldn't really talk but just use text baloons in conversation.|||For the most part, it's pretty horrible voice acting...
