Free to play is a double edged sword. On one hand it's free to continue to play. On the other, you'll have to pay for extra content and the quality is not the same as pay to play. We already know that GW2 will have DLC and a consumable cash shop, to purchase faster traveling speed, and xp boosts etc. Not a necessity to have, but if you want it. You gotta pay extra for it. I've seen many people pay more than $15 per month on such things.

This is not an official statement, this is just one of many times I have seen this mentioned in conjunction with GW2.
I've not heard about any 'Cash Shop' & quite frankly I find it pretty hard to believe ArenaNet would use a 'Cash Shop', but at the same time I cannot bring him up on that statement as I am not 100% sure any longer - as I have said, I have read so much (I can only assume) misinformation & misconceptions concerning Guild Wars 2.
I have never seen any official information concerning any use of the dreaded 'Cash Shop' - so how he can say "We already know that GW2 will have DLC and a consumable cash shop..."
Did I miss something?|||Yes, you did miss something. Unless Anet has changed there minds, there was one thing in particular that Anet said would be in a "cash shop" and that item would enable you to transfer the stats (or whatever) of one armor to another. So if you find an armor you love the look of, but hate the stats, but then you find an armor with awesome stats but you find to be butt ugly, with this item, you can take the stats from the ugly armor and put them on the neat armor.
I forget what the item is called though.
However, I would find it hard to believe that Anet WOULDN'T use a "cash shop". They already have one in GW. Why not?|||Questions about microtransactions come up every so often. We don't have all the details finalized, but here's what we can say at the moment:
We had microtransactions in Guild Wars, and naturally we will have them in Guild Wars 2. It is in everyone's best interest for Guild Wars 2 to have a strong ongoing revenue stream. Earning money after the launch of the game isn't primarily going towards paying for bandwidth or servers--it's to continue your game experience in fun and compelling ways. If you love playing Guild War 2 and if you enjoy compelling game experiences, then you will want the developers to keep working on it so you can enjoy your experience for a longer period of time.
Microtransactions can be evil, and in some games it is. As you can see in Guild Wars, it is not our intention to have evil microtransactions in Guild Wars 2 or any of our games.
When we finalize the details, we will have more information available.|||I think those stones (i also forgot the name) are a pretty major customization feature, so I hope we can also get them in game as a reward or something.|||Quote:

Wait, what? Where did that come from? Is this just conjecture on the part of who wrote that, or did ANet actually ever talk about anything like this?
Swapping the design of armor is harmless, getting XP isn't, especially if levels are important, unlike GW 1.|||Yes, the specifics are pulled out of the posters butt. We know that there will be a cash shop, that much is true, but then the poster proceeds to exemplify using his/her experience with F2P cash shops (where it is not uncommon to do have exp boosts etc) to say how GW2 will be. It should also be obvious that it is pure imagination due to the "faster traveling speed" comment, since, as we all know, GW2 will have instant travel.|||the way a cash shop is handled reflexes on what the goal of the dev team is, GW1 doesn't have any advantage items since they just want to add some fun thing while a game like champions online clearly shows greed trough the mask.
it is a double edged sword, but it's how the devs handle it that makes it bad or good.|||NC Soft and Arenanet both currently have cash shops for their games in most of those instances it has been only cosmetics or little powers or stuff that is not some kind of game breaker.
If xp boosts are somehow included, based on Arenanet's previous statements, then it will be available in game somewhere too. I think the stones for changing costumes were going to be that way as well. Just it will not be easy to obtain them in the game, and many will opt to spend money rather than time.|||This is either from ignorance of how GW has actually been for the last 6 years or it's intended to divert GW2 popularity as a Free 2 Play game. From the wording, I tend to think the latter.
While ANet has had a few items that generate the possiblity of some in-game advantage over the years. Nothing has ever been required to be purchased to be competative in the game itself. I see no reason to think they will change this with GW2.
Just to be clear, if they DO move that direction, I will seriously have to consider whether or not I will continue to support the franchise. I will not pay a monthly fee, nor will I be nickel and dimed to death.|||GW2 doesn't have a monthly fee.......sooo......HUH?
